The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that an annual expenditure of over 0 billion—costs related to lost work productivity, healthcare, and crime—can be attributed to the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs. Government statistics further report that as many as 20.4 million people, most of whom are actively employed, used some kind of illicit drug within the past 30 days.
Substances likely to be abused include alcohol, over-the-counter and prescription medications, vapor-producing chemicals, psychoactive plants, and illicit drugs. Over time, overindulging can become a difficult habit to break, as the line between being in control of and being ruled by the use of a substance isn’t easy to recognize.
Substance abuse in the workplace exposes the individual, his or her coworkers, and the company as a whole to the following risks:
• Diminished work quality and productivity;
• Impairment of decision-making abilities;
• Impairment of coordination, reflexes, and motor function;
• Creation of a hostile work environment;
• Increase in injuries and fatalities;
• Losses in healthcare and workers’ compensation claims and benefits;
• and more.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) even goes further to report that the most hazardous occupations—such as mining and construction—also have the highest rates of substance abuse among employees. It’s a recipe for disaster. The good news is that companies and their employees can take steps toward counteracting this problem through awareness and the strict implementation and enactment of substance abuse policies.
