Substance Abuse (alcohol): Overcoming Resistance with CBT: Case presentation
This video is part of a training on CBT use with substance users available at www.bestpracticetrainers.org. CEUs are available for NASW members or re-credentialling CASACs. In the video, the client exhibits denial in order to maintain her alcohol use. This example of family treatment demonstrates Mrs. Smith’s denial and the therapist’s use of basic empathy, reflection, affirmation as he presents information which may be new to the client. This use of new information is a classic way to intervene in the precontemplation stage, in which the client does not really see the problem with using substance. Here the therapist uses the idea that Mrs. Smith wants the best for her daughter to broach cutting down or abstaining from alcohol use.
